I recently purchased the book ‘How to learn any language’ by Barry Farber. My inspiration for buying this book is to finally learn Spanish properly. Taking multiple years of it in Junior High, and High School and I still cannot converse in it! It’s a waste, especially if I do not attempt to fix that mistake.
About the book! The book itself is a very easy read, which is a good start. It starts with Mr. Farber’s history with learning many languages and how he initially hated it and quickly turned it around and learned to love languages. He then describes his method, which is simply put to use as many resources as possible and work as hard as possible to learn the language. Then he details how to efficiently use otherwise ‘wasted’ time learning a language and memory retention methods.
He also takes time to make certain points and to dispel uncertainties and misconceptions. He also tries to make the book, and your decision and methods to learn a language, as fun as possible. He engourages people to use even the most vain of reasons to learn a language as long as it will keep you interested – picking up foreign women. He even goes as far as advising people on which language one should start to learn depending on their tastes. A bit sexist, but one can easily modify it to be sex neutral. The one thing he discourages is using dirty words or curse words. You should learn them so you know when others are insulting you, but refrain from using them.
Overall, I am extremely happy for purchasing the book. Some of his methods are technically outdated, but easily modified in the spirit of his method. Overall I think it will be a wonderful way to learn a language. I will try and blog my progress in learning conversational Spanish to see how well is book really helps learn a language!
