Book Review: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Part II

I just finished reading the second part of the book that is now a trilogy ‘Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell’. Where the first part almost completely focuses on Mr. Norrell, the second part tells the story of Jonathan Strange. Starting with Mr. Segundus accidentally interrupting one of Jonathan Strange’s Spells, it quickly progresses with Mr. Strange being convinced to meet with Mr. Norrell. Jonathan Strange seems to be the complete antithesis of Mr. Norrell. The only things that both magicians seem to have in common is Magic and love of country. Jonathan Strange agrees to be Mr. Norrell’s apprentice despite the obvious temperament differences, and as his apprentice goes on many adventures defending England and the Crown. However, it is not all too long before Jonathan Strange finds his relationship with Mr. Norrell has more negative aspects than positive ones and departs company. The book ends in a strong cliffhanger, leaving the third part to explain what has happened to the wife of Jonathan Strange.

I enjoyed reading this book even more than the first. I find the storyline and the setting absolutely fascinating and fun as well. What is intriguing me the most is that Mr. Norrell is constantly and variously described as a disagreeable fellow, and Jonathan Strange is thought of as a pleasant gentleman who is always willing to help honest people. Yet, when the quality of magic is described it is said that Jonathan Strange is the one performing more and more dark magic. I find that a rather interesting contradiction that will hopefully get more and more interesting in the last book.

I still give this book 5 thumbs on a hand and recommend that all people young and old pick up a copy of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell before it comes out in the theaters next year!
